File converter FAQ and answers
Practical answers about formats, limits, settings, output quality and how long files are kept.
The basics
Getting started
What can I convert with FileMixr?
FileMixr is an online file converter for common document and image tasks. You can convert images to PDF, change one image format into another, turn PDF pages into images, compress and optimize PDF files, and convert Word, Excel and PowerPoint files into PDF or image output.
Do I need a FileMixr account?
No. Every tool works without an account, a sign-up or an email address. Choose a file, set the options, convert, and use the result link directly from your browser.
Do I need to install an application?
No installation is required. FileMixr runs in a current desktop, tablet or mobile browser, so you can upload a supported file, choose conversion settings and download the result without installing desktop software.
Is FileMixr free to use?
Yes, the conversion tools are free to use. Fair-use rate limits apply so that one visitor cannot exhaust the server for everyone else. Any future change to availability or paid features will be shown clearly before it affects your use of the service.
How many files can I convert?
Conversions are limited per visitor to keep the service responsive: roughly one at a time, up to 6 per minute, 30 per hour and 100 per day from the same address. If you hit a limit, the page will tell you to wait and try again shortly.
Can I convert several files at once?
Not currently. Each conversion takes one source file. A multi-page PDF or Office document can still produce many output images from that single file, delivered together as a ZIP archive.
Images
Image conversion
Which image formats are supported?
Uploads are accepted as HEIC, HEIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, GIF, TIF, TIFF, AVIF and SVG. Output can be JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, GIF or TIFF, with PNG as the default in the image-to-image workflow.
Can I convert JPG, PNG or HEIC to another image format?
Yes. The image-to-image converter changes format while letting you pick the output type, resolution and optimization profile. It is the quickest fix when a website, email client, printer or application refuses the format you have, and the usual reason people convert HEIC photographs from a phone.
Which image format should I choose?
WEBP usually gives the smallest file at comparable quality and works in every current browser. JPG is the safest choice for photographs in older software but cannot store transparency. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which suits logos, screenshots and line art. TIFF suits print and archival handoffs.
PDF and Office
Documents
Can I convert a PDF to JPG or PNG images?
Yes. The PDF-to-image converter renders each page as an image and lets you choose the output format, resolution and optimization level. A one-page PDF returns a single image; a longer document returns a ZIP archive containing one numbered image per page.
Can I compress or optimize a PDF online?
Yes. The PDF optimizer downsamples and re-encodes the images inside a document, stores duplicated images once and compresses fonts, while keeping the text layer searchable and selectable. Compare the result with the original before using it for anything important.
Can I convert Word, Excel and PowerPoint files?
Yes. The Office converter accepts DOC and DOCX Word documents, XLS and XLSX Excel spreadsheets, and PPT and PPTX PowerPoint presentations, and can produce either a PDF or page images.
Can I convert a PDF back into Word or Excel?
Not at the moment. Conversion runs from Office formats to PDF or images, not the other way round. For PDF sources, the PDF-to-image and PDF compression tools are available.
Can I convert a password-protected file?
No. Encrypted or password-protected documents cannot be read by the converter. Remove the protection in your PDF reader or Office application first, then upload the unprotected file.
What happens when a file has multiple pages?
A multi-page PDF or Office document produces one image per page. A single output image is returned on its own, and multiple pages are returned as a ZIP archive so the whole result downloads together with its page order preserved.
Settings, quality and files
Results and privacy
Can I choose output format, resolution and optimization?
Yes, and the available settings depend on the conversion. Image output exposes format, resolution and an optimization profile. PDF output exposes an optimization profile, image resolution and a compression level. The controls are shown before you upload, not after.
Which resolution should I pick?
Use 72 DPI for screen-only use and thumbnails, 150 DPI for general documents, email and on-screen reading, and 300 DPI when the result will be printed or zoomed. Higher resolution means a larger file and a slower conversion.
Will the converted file look exactly like the original?
Not always. Fidelity varies because of embedded fonts, unsupported features, formulas, charts, transparency, animations, page layouts and differences between formats. Always open and review the result, especially before submitting it for legal, financial, academic, medical or business use.
How long are uploaded and converted files kept?
FileMixr stores the uploaded source and the generated result only so the conversion can finish and the result can be previewed or downloaded. Uploaded and converted files are scheduled for automatic deletion after 24 hours, with the cleanup process running every hour, and the preview and download links expire 30 minutes after a conversion finishes. Do not use FileMixr as backup or archival storage.
What should I do if a conversion fails?
Check that the file is not corrupted or password-protected, uses a supported extension and is within the 20 MB limit. Very large documents at 300 DPI can also exceed the processing time limit, so try a lower resolution or a smaller-file optimization profile. If the problem continues, use the Contact page and describe the conversion type and source format without sharing sensitive file contents.
Can I contact FileMixr about privacy or security?
Yes. Use the Contact page and select the privacy, security or legal topic that matches your request. Giving the affected tool, the approximate time and a short description lets support review the matter without you sending the original file.
